GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. —

Ferris State social work student Morgan Brockelbank wants a career specializing in working with children and their families, focusing on foster care or in schools.

She’s working as a foster care intern with D.A. Blodgett St. John’s in Grand Rapids. The organization offers comprehensive services, including foster care, adoption, counseling, and youth programs.

“Utilizing my knowledge of trauma-informed care, social-emotional learning, and play therapy, I help each child achieve their goals and discover their full potential,” she said. “Through this role, I am expanding my expertise and making a meaningful impact on the trajectory of these children's lives.”

Brockelbank works in the child welfare industry, conducting one-on-one sessions with foster children in their foster homes. She strives to support the children by creating a fun and safe environment tailored to their needs.

The Bachelor of Social Work program helped Brockelbank pursue this internship through a preparatory course that helped her enhance her résumé, cover letters and connect with agencies.

“Throughout my internship placement, I am participating in seminar sessions where I openly discuss my experiences, navigate challenges, and celebrate milestones alongside other classmates and a Social Work professor,” she said.
Brockelbank said internships in the social work field provide valuable experience.

“Try gaining as much experience as possible. There are so many different avenues in social work,” she said. “Even if shadowing here and there will benefit you.”

Ferris State’s Bachelor of Social Work Program graduates can hit the ground running in a field that needs qualified professionals. According to ZipRecruiter, the average annual pay of a foster care social worker is $44,843/year.
