Students Recognized for Outstanding Achievements During `A Tribute to Women' Event

‘A Tribute to Women’ Ferris State University students were honored for their outstanding achievements on campus with awards presented by the Office of Multicultural Student Services.

The students were recognized during the university’s annual “A Tribute to Women” event on Tuesday, March 5. The event is part of its Women’s History Month celebration.

Here is the list of awards and the 2013 student recipients:

Women Organization of Excellence Award – Presented to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. – Zeta Rho Chapter President Gabrielle Jackson, a senior from Inkster, Mich., majoring in Forensic Biology, and Vice President Shaprese Smith, a junior from Clinton Township, Mich., majoring in Criminal Justice

  • This award is presented to a woman-based organization that epitomizes leadership, scholarship, service and a commitment to diversity on campus.

Philanthropy and Community Service Award – Presented to Keasha Jones, a junior from Big Rapids, Mich., majoring in Criminal Justice

  • This honor is awarded to a woman who has displayed commitment, passion and support of causes for the community and community-based organizations.

Professional Woman Award – Presented to Kiara Hunter, a College of Arts, Sciences and Education senior from Detroit

  • This award is presented to a woman who continues to personify and distinguish herself by displaying and promoting outstanding professionalism.

Progressive Woman Award – Presented to Danielle Voorhies, a senior from Grand Haven majoring in Political Science 

  • This award is presented to a student who has displayed a commitment to and assisted with the creation and implementation of a particular program or issue of special relevance to women to improve the quality of life for women.
