Class Withdrawal: Financial Aid and Tuition FAQs

Your advisors are there to assist you on your journey towards getting your degree. Check with them to see if they have any suggestions. They will also be with whom you need to speak if you do need to withdraw from the class and can let you know how withdrawing will impact other classes you planned to take in future semesters.

In order to receive financial aid for future semesters, you must stay above a 2.00 GPA and complete 67% or more of your classes, cumulatively at the undergraduate level.

Graduate students must stay above a 3.00 GPA and complete 67% or more of your classes.

At this point of time in the semester, because you will be earning a grade of a “W”, it does not change your financial aid award for this semester.

No, at this point in the semester you are not eligible for a refund. You will pay for the course as if you completed it.

Yes, your financial aid will pay for it one more time. After the second attempt, if you do not pass it again, federal financial aid will not apply towards that course for a third time.

• You may email [email protected] and specify the class(es) from which you want to withdraw along with the last date you attended that class.

Your future class schedule will be cancelled.  You must apply for readmission through the Admissions Office.  You may apply online by going to admissions.  You must meet the same requirements expected of new applicants.

Exception:  Summer withdrawals will not affect your admission status or fall class schedule.

• Student Financial Services is required to pro-rate your federal aid – Title IV funds are awarded to a student under the assumption that the student will attend school for the entire period for which the funding is awarded. When a student withdraws, the student may no longer be eligible for the full amount of Title IV funds that the student was originally scheduled to receive. FSU will determine how much of your federal financial aid you have earned by the official withdrawal date. Any “unearned” federal financial aid must be returned to the appropriate programs. Federal Financial Aid Refund Policy
• Your future financial aid may be cancelled. You must contact the Financial Aid Office to determine what steps may be required to ensure your future financial aid.
• You will begin to use your student loan grace periods. Please complete Direct Loan Exit Counseling (Perkins Loan Exit Counseling must also be completed if you have had a Perkins Loan while attending KCAD/FSU.  You will receive an email from University Accounting Service when you can complete the counseling.)

Many students who withdraw will owe the University money.  Frequently the tuition charges that are reduced on your account are not the same amount as the funds that must be returned to the federal financial aid programs.  This results in you owing the University money. Any student who completes a total withdrawal will be removed from their payment plan.

Total Withdrawal Tuition Refund Schedule

This policy deals with crediting charges to students' accounts depending on the point at which students withdraw in a semester. If a student withdraws from all of their classes during the semester, their account (e.g., tuition, housing, and meals) will be credited using the withdrawal date and percent reflected.

Federal Financial Aid Refund Policy

This policy deals with the returning of federal financial aid to the Title IV Programs which is mandated by Federal Title IV regulations.

The institution and the student share the responsibility to return Title IV funds. The institution returns the un-earned funds that have been paid to the school to cover the student's institutional charges. The student is responsible to repay any un-earned funds to the school and/or to the federal program from which it came.

The school must return Title IV funds no later than 45 days after the date the school determines the student withdrew. Students who unofficially withdraw (stop attending classes, but do not notify the appropriate office) will not be notified of the un-earned return of funds until after the semester is over. This late calculation usually results in the student owing a balance to the university.

All refunds will be processed within three to four weeks.   A refund check will be mailed to your permanent address, or the refund will be direct deposited if you have a valid direct deposit account set up.

• Total withdrawal forms may be completed online in your Ferris360 portal.
• You may withdraw in person by going to the Student Services Office.
• You may email [email protected] asking for a total withdrawal along with the date you last attended any class. 
• Medical Withdrawals should be initiated by contacting the Academic Records Office at (616) 259-1104. Upon review of the possible ramifications, if a Medical Withdrawal is still desired, the student must provide a written letter to the Academic Records Office explaining the circumstances surrounding the need for a medial withdrawal and submit documentation from an appropriate medical professional substantiating the circumstances of the need for a medical withdrawal. The information will be submitted to the Dean of Academic Affairs for consideration.
