A leading executive who actively contributes to the betterment of Ferris State University will serve as Homecoming Grand Marshal on Saturday, Sept. 24. Alumnus Matt Bissett and his family will be honored in Big Rapids during the Homecoming celebration.

“I am humbled, to say the least,” Bissett said. “I have great admiration for Ferris, not only because of its impact on me during my college years, some 28 years ago, but also how it has continued to be a big part of my professional career. So having this level of involvement is an honor that I do not take lightly.”

Bissett, a 1998 graduate of Ferris’ Surveying Engineering program, is now a partner and senior vice president with Atwell, LLC, a company he joined days after earning his Bachelor of Science degree. He convinced the multi-service firm to establish scholarships for Ferris’ Surveying Engineering students and those pursuing Associate of Applied Science degrees in Surveying Technology. Matt and his wife, Melissa, have also established their own Surveying Engineering scholarship, intended for students from Michigan’s thumb. Matt grew up on a farm in Sandusky.

Bissett joined The Ferris Foundation’s Board of Directors early in 2022.

The theme for Ferris’ 2022 Homecoming celebration is “Bulldogs Recharged,” focused on the energy brought by weathering the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on social gatherings in the last two-plus years. The Homecoming parade will step off along Michigan Avenue in downtown Big Rapids at noon, with tailgating in lots near Top Taggart Field running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“It is such an exciting time at Ferris, with the football program coming off their historic run last year,” Bissett said. “I am a big fan and have followed the team since I was in school, so I am excited for the opportunity to continue to support and watch them build on the momentum.”

Ferris’ top-ranked football team will host Waldorf University of Iowa, with a 3 p.m. kickoff for the 2022 Homecoming contest.
