Collaborative Effort Organized to Present Community Health Fair April 5

PhotoA Community Health Fair, coordinated by Ferris State University’s College of Health Professions, is set Tuesday, April 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Interdisciplinary Resource Center connector. A free virtual health fair will be available online Thursday, April 7, and Friday, April 8.

Ferris State University academic colleges and programs will join regional experts to promote public wellness in a Community Health Fair on Tuesday, April 5, on the Big Rapids campus.

Tracy Glentz, a professor in the College of Health Professions' Interprofessional Core Curriculum, said Ferris’ Interdisciplinary Resource Center connector should fill with exhibits and informational tables from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as students and professionals return to face-to-face community outreach activities.

“Our 2020 event was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with our 2021 fair being available to contacts through virtual means,” Glentz said. “We are pleased to have a strong response from College of Health Professions programs, and students from Ferris’ Nursing program, the College of Pharmacy and professionals from Birkam Health Center, the Ferris Counseling office and District Health Department #10.”

Glentz said this collaborative group presents informational poster displays and research on personal health topics at the fair. Additionally, the event offers students and attending area residents screening that can guide lifestyle choices and improve their well-being.

“Student groups will offer handouts on various subjects, there will be dental health tips available and blood pressure checks, along with dietary information and anti-violence education,” Glentz said. “This is an experiential learning opportunity for our students, through interactions with and providing counsel to those who attend the fair. We hope area residents of all ages and our students take part, for their health’s sake.”

Glentz added that a virtual health fair website gives users access and information online Thursday, April 7 and Friday, April 8.

Those who have a disability and wish to receive accommodations to participate in the Community Health Fair can contact the College of Health Professions by email or phone at (231) 591-2270.
