Summer Internships: Antion Johnson

Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet:

Antion Johnson

He is: a native of Flint, studying Social Work and completing an internship with ProSeniors, a Cincinnati, Ohio-based nonprofit.

About Antion’s Internship, Making a Difference: “I am presently employed as an ombudsman associate, a person who advocates for residents in nursing homes and group homes. We contact families to review their loved one’s rights and explain how they can ensure they receive respect and decency. I feel that I am making a difference by empowering the residents of nursing homes and group homes to stand up for themselves. In Ohio, there are 33 rights these facilities must follow and we make sure each one is met.”

Finding the Internship: “Ferris was not involved in my locating this internship. I got a recommendation from one of my aunt’s friends that worked for the company. The Social Work program prepared me to take on the internship head on, though.”

Future Plans: “My long-term goals are to obtain a master’s degree in Social Work and work in a hospital, aiding individuals of all ages with their issues. I wish to assist bereaved families and link them to the appropriate resources. I hope that this internship will improve my communication skills and broaden my knowledge of Social Work in general.”

Other Campus Involvement: “I am enrolled in Ferris’ Honors Program and am a member of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars. My will to succeed is a unique ability I possess. No matter what, I will always give my all and never settle for less.”

Advice for other Students Seeking Internships: “Make sure that you network and make connections. You never know what possibilities may present themselves in the future. You could set yourself up for life. Also, do not be hesitant to ask professors if they are aware of any internship opportunities. I believe the university is full of individuals who would happily assist you.”
