Student Safety, Ease of Access Key Considerations for Move-In Days, Aug. 25-29

PhotoStudents living in Ferris State University residence halls, apartments and suites will begin their Move-In efforts on Wednesday, Aug. 25. The Office of Housing and Residence Life will have near 100 resident advisors and veteran hall directors on hand to oversee the process and assist students throughout the academic year.

Lessons learned from providing housing and dining services to Ferris State University students the last two semesters have factored into the Office of Housing and Residence Life’s move-in plans to begin the 2021-22 academic year.

Bryan Marquardt, director of Housing and Residence Life, said there are approximately 3,000 students to welcome into residence halls. With the incoming students, health considerations related to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic are a primary concern.

“Last year’s process, to provide our move-in days across three weekdays allowed for better service to students, along with less traffic pressure across campus,” Marquardt said. “All students taking residence in a Ferris facility will be welcomed at Wink Arena, where COVID testing will be required, as they pick up their information packets, room or residence keys and other information. There will also be COVID-19 vaccines for those students interested in receiving their first or second dose.”

Students moving into East Campus Suites and Bond and Cramer halls can arrive beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25. Marquardt said move-in schedules for all areas are available.

“We are glad to have golf carts and staff available again to help move a resident’s items from a car to their building,” Marquardt said. “When you see someone in a red Housing staff t-shirt, they will be happy to offer the assistance and information necessary to make a safe and simple move-in to your campus home.”

Marquardt said his staff of hall directors and resident advisors is excited and well prepared to serve their communities in the academic year to come. Several completed projects will support a clean and refreshing experience for those living in on-campus facilities.

“New flooring is in Hallisy Hall, with many facilities receiving a fresh coat of paint and new furnishings,” Marquardt said. “The custodial staff have stepped forward during the summer months to offer a clean and inviting environment in each of our buildings, which still have spaces available for those students who only recently confirmed their education plans for the coming year. We welcome all calls and will be happy to help you return to campus in a single or double room.”

Marquardt added that his office has collaborated with the Office of Admissions to place as much pertinent information as they can make available, both for returning and prospective students. After the weekend of Aug. 28-29, when all remaining student groups can complete move-in, Fall 2021 semester classes will begin on Monday, Aug. 30.
