Summer Internships: Travis Hicks

Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet:

Travis Hicks

He is: a senior from Oak Park, studying Sports Communication.

His Internship: Travis is a reporter and game host for the Royal Oak Leprechauns, a Great Lakes Summer Collegiate Baseball League member.

“I’m learning a lot about on-camera experience and how to edit videos. I am also learning how it feels to speak in front of 1,000 people and be entertaining.”

Was Ferris Helpful in Gaining Your Internship? “Dr. A (Sports Communication Program Coordinator Sandy Alspach) helped me get connected with Mark Sackett, who is the general manager of the Leprechauns. I was able to apply for my current position. There were 40 of us going for this reporting/hosting position with the team.”

Advice for Students Seeking Internship Opportunities: “Create a LinkedIn account and update your resume, reach out to teams and companies and bet on yourself. Anything is possible if you believe in yourself.”

Other Activities at Ferris: “I’m involved in Bulldog Radio, a registered student organization, where I ran a sports podcast. That helped me get the position I currently have.”

Ferris Core Value Travis Relates to: Diversity. “I believe it helps to define me as different and having the ability to stand out. In the field I am trying to pursue, there are not many black journalists on television who are not a former athlete. I know I have to work hard to make it, which is something I am very willing to do.”
