in the 2020-21 academic year.Two members of Ferris State University’s Alpha Iota chapter of Lambda Kappa Sigma, the professional pharmacy fraternity for women, will continue their studies supported by recently-announced educational grant awards.
Miranda Blaine, of Flint, a third-year student in Ferris’ College of Pharmacy, learned that she was a Cora E. Craven Educational Grant recipient. The award amount is $1,000. Emily Faltin, of Davison, is also a third-year Pharmacy student. She received that same amount through the Mary Connolly Livingston Educational Grant, according to the Lambda Kappa Sigma Educational Trust and its Educational Grants Committee.
“I have been in Lambda Kappa Sigma since I began my sophomore year at Ferris,” Blaine said. “It has provided me a number of great experiences, including a term as the corresponding secretary on our executive board. That helped me realize the importance of networking in this industry, and the significance of keeping our alumni informed and engaged with the chapter. I also served as our chapter delegate for the LKS National Convention, which was held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, last year. I helped to raise funds so that others in the fraternity could attend the convention. It was a great experience that offered a variety of learning opportunities and activities that will make Alpha Iota a better chapter.”
Faltin said that the application requirements were extensive.
“I began the process of applying for this grant just after the close of the Fall 2019 semester and filed the necessary materials in mid-January,” Faltin said. “It was the middle of March when I learned that I had been awarded the Mary Connolly Livingston Educational Grant. As I enter my third year of post-graduate studies, the grant will be extremely helpful in offsetting the costs of my education. I have actively sought grants and scholarships throughout my collegiate experience.”
The Educational Grants Committee announced 12 awards for the 2020-21 academic year. The LKS Educational Trust was established in 1974 to perpetuate a financial program to assist members in pursuing their pharmaceutical education goals. Lambda Kappa Sigma, headquartered in Muskego, Wisconsin, was established in 1913 and is the oldest and largest professional fraternity in the world for women in pharmacy.
