Summer Internships: Hunter Dennis

Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet:

Ferris State UniversityHunter Dennis

He is: entering his fifth year as a Ferris student. Hunter is from Morrice, Michigan, and is pursuing his Bachelor of Science in Manufacturing Engineering Technology. Hunter has already earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Welding Technology.

His Internship/Making a Difference:Hunter is with L&W Engineering’s Holland plant. “It has been a ‘jump right in’ type of experience so far. The very first day, I was tasked with changing an automatic pneumatic nut feeder to electrical service. Each day, since, has been a new adventure or project that needs to be solved. Most are time sensitive because they pertain to a robot making a bad part, and I have to figure out why and fix it as soon as possible. Each bad part costs the company money.”

Future Plans: “I know I want to continue to pursue a career in the automotive industry. Last summer, I was a production supervisor for Fiat/Chrysler Automobiles in Detroit and enjoyed that, so I know I enjoy the automotive side.”

Advice to Other Students Seeking Internships: “My biggest piece of advice would be to go to every job fair that Ferris offers and shake as many hands as you can. It is a numbers game. The more resumés you can get out to companies, the better.”

Other Activities on Campus: “I am the president of the club baseball team here at Ferris. I have been on the team since my freshman year and climbed the ranks quickly. We have a good returning core and hopefully can pick up some good freshmen this year to make a run at the playoffs. I am also a very avid fisherman. I am fishing just about every chance I get. I travel the country in search of the best fishing I can find.”

Ferris Core Value Hunter Relates to:Learning. “When it comes down to it, that’s why we are here, to learn.”
