Summer Internships: Catie Schmidt

Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet:

Catie SchmidtCatie Schmidt

She is: a senior from Oxford, Michigan, in the Public Relations program and earning a minor in Events Management.

Her Internship: is with News Services office in Ferris State University’s University Advancement and Marketing division. “I run certain social media accounts for Ferris, create writing content on different topics, and co-host Summer Series, which is on the Ferris State Video YouTube channel. I’ve been interviewing different students on different things and gaining confidence in interviewing.”

Was Ferris Involved in Securing Your Internship?: “Obviously since it’s a Ferris job, it helped… But what really helped most was having a good network of people. It’s mostly about who you know, so since I knew the right people, the skills that I’ve gained along the way help me that much more.”

Future Plans: “I graduate May 2021 and plan to move back home to Oakland County. Ideally, I want to work with the Red Wings, but if that doesn’t work out, then I want to work agency for a few years. If I don’t get into sports, I want to end up doing influencer PR and product launches.”

Other Activities: “Over the 2019-20 school year, I served as the vice president of communications for the American Marketing Association. I also am a member of Public Relations Student Society of American. I also spent the last school year doing communications with FSU’s Athletic Department.”

Core Value Catie Relates to: “I think the core value I relate most to is ethical community. I’m very passionate about doing the right thing all the time. I want to work hard to make certain companies I’m working for are doing the most ethical things they can possibly be doing.
