Summer Internships: Tyler Dard

Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet:

Tyler DardTyler Dard

He is: entering his senior year. The Stanwood native is in Business Administration with a minor in Project Management and Leadership.

His Internship: serving as an estimator/project manager with Rieth-Riley Construction Company. “I measure job sites with a wheel in the field, perform takeoffs online (measuring areas online), making use of software to assemble bid proposals, communicating with truck drivers and subcontractors on sites, confirming projects are on schedule, and working with the crews.”

How Did Ferris Help Provide This Opportunity? “I went to the fall job fair with hopes of getting an internship with Rieth-Riley since I knew they had a booth there. I talked to their very nice human resources contacts, which went well, so I had hopes of hearing back from them. Luckily, I did, and I took further steps to get a spot in the Grand Rapids office.”

Future Plans: “I hope this internship leads to a great relationship with Rieth-Riley. I plan to look for a job in the civil construction industry, where Rieth-Riley Construction would be my first option.”

Advice For Students Seeking Internships: I would encourage them to try and get multiple internships as they pursue their degree. I did not realize what I wanted to do early enough in my college career to start looking for them. I believe if I were a second-year intern with Rieth-Riley, I would be a lot better and more comfortable doing each task, because of the additional experience.”

Ferris Core Value Tyler Relates To: Opportunity. “Ferris has provided me the opportunity to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in a global pandemic. Because of their support, I am in an internship that has helped me determine what I would like to do after I graduate.”
