Mecosta County Development Corporation Establishes Scholarship Endowment at Ferris

Ferris State UniversityThe Mecosta County Development Corporation has established a new scholarship endowment through The Ferris Foundation to provide financial support to high school seniors planning to enroll in Ferris State University’s College of Engineering Technology.

David Hamelund, chairman of the MCDC board, said he is pleased with the positive response he has received from corporation members and others from the community who have made a financial commitment to the scholarship endowment.

“We are elated that a number of community leaders have made a gift to our scholarship endowment and share MCDC’s commitment to helping produce a talented workforce now and in the future for area manufacturers and the business community,” Hamelund said.

He said the Mecosta County Development Corporation Skilled Technology Scholarship Endowment will make a Ferris education more accessible for graduates of the Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School District who have completed the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics program and plan to enroll in the College of Engineering Technology.

Hamelund noted that if there are no students who have completed the FIRST Robotics program who apply for the scholarship, then any MOISD graduate who enrolls in the College of Engineering Technology and or the College of Health Professions is eligible to apply.

He said the timing for establishing the MCDC Skilled Technology Scholarship Endowment was ideal. “With the Ferris Futures Scholarship Challenge matching gift program underway, the MCDC was able to double its gift commitment of $37,500 to create $75,000 in new scholarship support for local students planning to attend Ferris. This has been a win-win for MCDC and MOISD college-bound students.”

Hamelund said a scholarship endowment was an appealing gift option for the MCDC because the endowment principal remains intact in perpetuity and continues to accrue earnings. “The MCDC scholarship endowment is a permanent source of financial support for current and future generations of MOISD students. Leaving a legacy through this means is yet another way that MCDC can make a lasting impact on the community.”

Anyone can make a charitable contribution at any time to the MCDC Skilled Technology Scholarship Endowment. Please contact Jim Sandy, president of MCDC at (231) 592-3403 or The Ferris Foundation at (231) 591- 2365 if you are interested in making a gift.
