The Ferris State University School of Criminal Justice, in the College of Education
and Human Services, has been ranked by a publication for its capacity and quality.The capacity and quality of Ferris State University’s Law Enforcement Academy instruction have been recognized by one of the United States’ first stand-alone online news operations, Cape Cod Today.
Professor of Criminal Justice and Ferris’ LEA Coordinator Cecil Queen said it was an honor to find the university listed with institutions like Michigan State University, Purdue University, American University, in Washington, D.C.; Washington State University, in Pullman, Washington; and Liberty University, in Lynchburg, Virginia.
“Most of these schools are Tier-1 universities with research backgrounds,” Queen said. “I feel that our academy, even our School of Criminal Justice, are comparable in terms of the learning we deliver. We have researched our students’ success in gaining employment in their chosen field, which is on equal footing with the top CJ programs, nationally. Our 95-percent placement rate is significant, and we are pleased that our graduates find these opportunities in agencies, departments, and in the private sector.”
The article highlights Ferris’ ability to accept students in the Law Enforcement Academy and the Criminal Justice degree paths at the Associate of Applied Sciences, Bachelor of Science and graduate levels, along with minors in four subject areas. It also acknowledges grant opportunities that are available for students who complete admission essays and characterizes Ferris’ tuition costs as “relatively low.” Queen said the School of Criminal Justice strives to be a destination and resource for students interested in law enforcement and for professionals in the field.
“We place a high priority on making more people aware of the academy and what it offers,” Queen said. “There are hopes to develop a regional training facility near the Big Rapids main campus that could benefit law enforcement across the region, which would allow Ferris to collaborate with other schools who would come to train on the site.”
