Alumnus Ira Childress Opens Up 2018 Sports Speaker Series

Ferris State UniversityFerris State University alumnus, former football student-athlete and former associate director of Alumni Relations, Ira Childress, returns to campus Monday, Jan 22 for his annual Sports Communication program pep talk. The event is set for room 115 of the Interdisciplinary Resource Center (IRC), beginning at 6 p.m.

Currently serving in the Lansing area as the Okemos High School athletics director, Childress offers advice, based on his professional experiences, to Ferris students pursuing careers in sports communication.

“He’s a great speaker, he’s entertaining, he’s passionate, he’s real and students groove on him,” said Sandy Alspach, a Humanities professor in the College of Arts, Sciences and Education and advisor for Ferris’ Sports Communication program. “He has been attending this event every year, since 2011, and every time he brings new stories from his life experiences.”

Beyond Alspach’s Sports Communication students, Childress attracts many Ferris student-athletes and other students interested in the sports industry.

“Childress has a lot of experience in the sports industry,” said Teodora Stefanovic, a Ferris senior tennis student-athlete majoring in Management. “I personally enjoyed his presentation, last year, and I’m looking forward to hearing new advice I will be able to use in my future career.”

The presentation is part of the Spring 2018 Sports Speaker Series which is co-sponsored by the Sports Careers RSO. The series features one speaker each month, through April.

The event is free and open to the public, however, seating is limited and attendees are encouraged to arrive early to ensure their spot.
