Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.
Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet:
Marquise Dawsey
He is: completing his Bachelor of Science degree in Television and Digital Media Production
by working as an intern at Coastline Studios in Grand Rapids. Marquise is from Bradenton,
Florida.
On His Internship: “I am involved in a great deal of content editing, and have also learned about grouping
video content. It allows you to sequence images from a multi-camera production by
using time codes. The video can then be synchronized, which makes editing more efficient.
It is also easier to go back in and make adjustments to the content. I will also be
going out in the field, as we produce wedding videos, and learn more about the processes
involved there.”
Future Plans: “Working in this internship will help advance my desires to produce music videos.
I feel that I have gained some valuable experience in multi-camera production technique,
and believe that will be a great benefit in pursuing my goals.”
Was Ferris Involved in Securing His Internship: “The TDMP program had Coastline Studios among its internship listings, and I have
visited Grand Rapids on a number of occasions while I have been at Ferris. The people
here are really cool, and have been very willing to offer me lots of valuable instruction
during my time here.”
Making A Difference at His Internship: “I am taking on work that will be presented to clients,” Dawsey said. “It is great
to be getting that kind of experience, helping to meet the production demands at Coastline
Studios.”
Amy Kusmierz is a Coastline Studios employee and a 2014 graduate of Ferris’ TDMP program.
“Marquise is doing a great job, here, as he is very open to learning about what we
produce here and not afraid to ask questions,” Kusmierz said. “He has been a real
asset in his efforts to catalog video content. Having him here has been a very positive
and beneficial experience.”
Other Interests: Marquise was a four-year letter winner on the Ferris football team and earned All-Great
Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Honorable Mention as a starter at defensive
end for the Bulldogs in 2017.
Ferris Core Values Marquise Identifies With: Learning and Diversity. “I found that professors really want to work with you, not
just show you concepts and let it be. I got some important assistance in mastering
some concepts by coming back for more time with my instructors after a football practice.
With regard to diversity, I was pleased to find that, at Ferris, people weren’t overly
concerned with what you are, or where you came from. It was a refreshing attitude
since I had gone through some unpleasant experiences in other places I have been.”
