Ferris Fulbrighters Celebrate 25th Anniversary with Return Visit From First Foreign Lecturer

Ferris State UniversityFerris State University faculty and emeriti, who have earned Fulbright scholarships, will gather on Thursday, April 19 to welcome Ivo Soljan, for a 25th-anniversary Robert C. Ferguson Foreign Lecture presentation, “Are We Any Wiser Today: One More Disappointing WORLD DIS-ORDER.”

Christine Vonder Haar, a professor in the English, Literature, and World Languages department, is Ferris’ coordinator for the Fulbright Scholar programs. She said Soljan’s 4:30 p.m. lecture in room 120 of the Interdisciplinary Resources Center is free and open to the public.

“He has come full circle from our beginning,” Vonder Haar said. “Though he has visited Ferris several times, in the interim, we are thrilled to welcome Ivo back.”

Soljan is a professor of English Literature at Grand Valley State University, who first lectured at Ferris on “Despair, Hope, and Warnings: The New World Order and Former Yugoslavia” in April 1993. The native of Croatia, in the former Yugoslavia, also participated in the 1995 Dayton Accords, the international peace negotiations that produced the end of hostilities and the peace agreement for the seven republics in that area. Soljan is a two-time Fulbright Scholar.

Vonder Haar, a Ferris faculty member since 2005, said the annual Ferguson Foreign Lecture is a tribute to the 25 years the Fulbrighters have nurtured a legacy of international thought and increasing student involvement on campus.

“We are thankful for the unwavering support throughout our history from the Office of the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs,” Vonder Haar said. “The commitment and support offered by a number of administrators in that office allow us to celebrate this jubilee.”

Anyone with a disability who requires accommodation assistance, to participate in this event, should contact Vonder Haar at (231) 591-2528 at least 72 hours in advance.
