Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships.
Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability,
develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require
one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better
understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.
Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet:
Timothy Pete
He is: a senior from Lansing, Mich., majoring in Business Administration.
His Internship: At Farm Bureau Insurance’s state offices in Lansing, Timothy was given a broad view of the corporate operations of the insurer, and their varied coverage.
Did Ferris Help him Find the Internship? “Yes, the College of Business’ internship coordinator made a presentation before my class, and I researched Farm Bureau, whose corporate office is close to my home in Lansing. I came prepared to the Career and Internship Fair, applied and was accepted.”
Future Plans: “I would like to stay with Farm Bureau, as I have found it to be a welcoming, and happy environment. I am also open to broadening my experience as I start my career.”
Advice for Ferris Internship Seekers: “Be confident, because if you try, you can secure an opportunity. Also, take your networking seriously.”
Other Activities at Ferris: Timothy had served as a resident advisor, and will now serve Residence Life and Housing as a suites coordinator. As an RA, he was part of the Harmony Project, and staffed events through the Student Recreation Center, such as 5K races.
Making a Difference: “I was given the opportunity to give my perspective as a millennial to the larger
company. I did research, and presented that project at the Farm Bureau corporate office.”
