Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships.
Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability,
develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require
one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better
understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.
Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet:
Keegan Furlong
He is: a senior in Advertising and Integrated Marketing Communications from Plymouth, Mich.
His Internship: with the Detroit Branding Company. “I was able to learn how a branding company operates, and assist in implementation of various communications, including direct mail using Mailchimp.”
Future Plans: Keegan hopes to pursue a career in Advertising, and enjoyed his interactions with clients while with the Detroit Branding Company. “My internship experience was directly related to practices I was reviewing in online classes I was taking in my curriculum.”
Advice for Ferris Students Seeking Internships: Use any contacts you have in the profession, and work on your LinkedIn profile. “I followed local agencies on LinkedIn, and joined groups. It helped me look into what people were saying, in advertising it’s important to be current.”
Core Values Keegan Relates to: Learning, as Keegan enjoyed the fast-paced acquisition of knowledge in the Advertising field. His basic skills he applied in his internship were formed in classroom training, and online instruction from Ferris.
Making a Difference in his Internship: Keegan was able to coordinate some cobranding, acquiring samples from other companies to combine in offers to potential customers. “I was cold calling companies for samples, and was not sure how it would work out. I got four responses, with contributions of up to a thousand samples.”
