Office of Multicultural Student Services Announces Black History Month Events

Ferris State UniversityFerris State University’s Office of Multicultural Student Services is set to host Black History Month Celebration activities beginning Thursday, Feb. 4.

The month-long celebration recognizes the achievements made by African Americans and their important roles in U.S. history. The celebration has been an annual Ferris event since February 1976.

Listed below are scheduled events from Ferris’ 2016 Black History Month Celebration:

Black Culture Expo
Thursday, Feb. 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
University Center, Room 202BC

The OMSS and the student organization Black Leaders Aspiring for Critical Knowledge have collaborated to host a Black Culture Expo 2016 on Thursday, Feb. 4 from 11 a.m. to 2p.m. in University Center, Room 202BC. The event will include a performance by the “West Michigan Jewels of Africa” and educational stations highlighting African American excellence in a variety of fields such as the arts and education. Black Culture Expo 2016 is funded by student activity fees as allocated by the Finance Division of Student Government.

Image Awards 2016
Friday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m.
University Center, Room 202

Ferris students, faculty and staff are invited to come out Friday, Feb. 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the University Center, Room 202 for the “2016 Image Awards.” The 21st annual Image Awards, hosted by B.L.A.C.K. is a free, formal event that recognizes the achievements and leadership of Ferris minority students, faculty and staff. The Image Awards will include performances and award presentations. It is also funded by student activity fees as allocated by the Finance Division of Student Government.

Knowledge Is Power
Tuesday, Feb. 16 from 7 to 9 p.m.
University Center, Room 202B

The Ferris chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the OMSS will host a Black History Month trivia contest, titled Knowledge Is Power, on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. in UC 202B. There will be light refreshments and giveaways for those who attend and participate.

Truth Brunch
Thursday, Feb. 25 at 11 a.m.
University Center, room 202B

Alpha Phi Alpha presents the Truth Brunch on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 11 a.m. in the University Center, Room 202B. The brunch aims to provide a platform for the campus to engage with one another, and to hear from a guest speaker on the topic of African American culture. The event is free, but attendees are required to RSVP to the OMSS at [email protected] or visit FLITE 159.

All Ferris Black History Month events are free and open to the public.
