Sports Careers to Host ‘Red Out’ Saturday for Athletics Events

Sports Careers, a Ferris State University registered student organization, is ready to bring awareness to heart health during home athletics events on Saturday, Feb. 13 in the Ewigleben Sports Complex.

The Red Out day of awareness kicks off in Jim Wink Arena as the Ferris women’s basketball team hosts Lake Superior State at 1 p.m. while the Bulldog men will host the Laker men at 3 p.m. The Red Out continues into the evening as the Bulldog hockey team wraps up its two-game series with a 7:07 p.m. contest against Northern Michigan, across the hall in the Ewigleben Ice Arena.

“Students should come to support these events, and this cause, because it has affected a lot of our peers on a personal level,” said Cierra Buckner, a junior in the Sports Communication program and coordinator for Red Out.

Spectators at the athletics events are encouraged to participate in three ways: wear red to the games, participate in the silent auction and donate during the ‘Miracle Minute.’ Proceeds are donated to the cardiac unit at the Spectrum Health Hospital in Big Rapids.

“We are also encouraging students to attend because we have really cool auction items and local community sponsors have provided us with great giveaways,” Buckner said.

Red Out is a collaborative effort that includes the Sports Careers student organization, the Athletics Department and students in Professor Sandy Alspach’s Sports Communication 389 and 489 classes.

For more information about these events, please contact Cierra Buckner by email or visit the Facebook page for the Sports Careers RSO.
