Welding Competition to Feature More than $60K in Scholarships and Prizes

Ferris State UniversityFerris State University’s College of Engineering Technology will be hosting its 2015 Secondary Welding Competition on Friday, May 8.

The event, now in its 13th year, will take place in the welding lab of the Swan Building. The annual competition welcomes students from across the state of Michigan. Competing schools may bring one competitor for each of the five welding categories. The students begin arriving at 8 a.m. and the welding commences at 9 a.m. in the welding lab and runs until about 2 p.m. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Currently, 34 schools have signed up for the competition with 146 competitors – representing near record levels. The Welding Engineering Technology program has more than $60,000 in scholarships and prizes earmarked to be given away to student competitors.

Welding faculty will judges the competition. Additionally, more than 40 Ferris welding students will help facilitate the contest. The event also includes a continuing education seminar for teachers attending with the visiting students.

Jeff Hardesty, a Welding associate professor and the program coordinator noted, “Many Ferris students, as well as high school welding teachers and professionals, were previous competitors in this event.”
