Ferris State UniversityVIDEO: Beyond Diversity Event Scheduled for Oct. 19

Ferris State University’s Beyond Diversity series continues as an interactive exhibit in the Interdisciplinary Resource Center Connector from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19.

Beyond Diversity is a series events hosted throughout the 2014-15 academic year. This year’s Beyond installment is designed to promote Ferris’ diversity. The mission of the Beyond Diversity is to take the university community on a thought-provoking journey to consider global perspectives and explore the true meaning of diversity. Event organizers aim to educate audiences relative to culture, diverse ideas and study abroad opportunities that will allow individuals to be immersed in another culture for firsthand experiences.

“The Beyond initiative is in its third year and the goal is to encourage students to go beyond their comfort zone, to go beyond what they’re learning in the classroom and connect it to experiences outside of the classroom,” said Lisa vonReichbauer, assistant director of the Office of International Education.

Faculty and staff will be present to engage in conversation with students on topics and, in some cases, provide hands-on activities related to the topic.

“Ferris State University challenges students to be successful in a diverse and globalized world and part of this effort is what goes beyond the major and outside of the classroom,” said Peter Bradley, director of the Honors program. “Beyond Diversity challenges students to do co-curricular activities that are connected to their classroom experience, but are extended in some interesting and important ways.”
