Marketing Student Learns Valuable Human Resources Skills at Team Detroit

Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet: Anders Johnson

Anders JohnsonHe is: A senior from Minneapolis, Minn., majoring in Marketing.

Internship: Johnson is spending his summer interning as a Human Resources Coordinator for Team Detroit. Team Detroit is a full-service advertising agency located in Dearborn, Mich.

Johnson is completing his 12-week paid internship over the summer.

What he enjoys: So far, Johnson said his favorite part of his internship is getting to spend time with his new coworkers. Whether they are going out to lunch or getting together on Friday afternoons, he said that he “couldn’t ask for a better department.”

What he is learning: Johnson is spending the summer learning about the recruiting process.

“I didn’t realize how much work goes into bringing a candidate into your workplace,” Johnson said.

Besides learning about recruitment, he is responsible for booking travel, assisting with the internship program and scheduling interviews.

What he is looking forward to: Johnson is looking forward to learning more about the agency’s other departments. Johnson said he’s “excited to learn about how the groups work together” and the different cultures of each group.

Core Value: Ferris’ core values that Johnson’s internship most emulate are “opportunity” and “collaboration.”

“There are so many opportunities at Team Detroit to further your career,” Johnson said. “The employees are all here to help you get where you want to go.”
