BIG RAPIDS – Ferris State University Welding Engineering Technology (WET) students
will travel to Detroit Sept. 9 for the American Welding Society Detroit Section’s
annual Student Night. They will be accompanied by WET faculty.
This year, AWS Detroit provided more than $30,000 in scholarship funding to Ferris State students, WET officials said. The trip provides WET students an opportunity to say thank you and demonstrate the success of AWS Detroit’s scholarship program.
Since 1986, AWS has contributed more than $900,000 in scholarships to Ferris State WET students.
Ferris State’s nationally recognized WET program was established in 1984 and is the largest of its kind in the United States. Since its inception, the program has had major revisions in response to constituent feedback. The program is designed to produce plant-level WETgraduates who are involved in the concept, design and engineering of weldments and implementation of welding processes. This overall knowledge of weldmentsand the ability to engineer welding and joining systems produces graduates who are in great demand and highly compensated.
The American Welding Society was founded in 1919 as a multifaceted, nonprofit organization with a goal to advance the science, technology and application of welding and related joining disciplines. From factory floor to high-rise construction, from military weaponry to home products, AWS continues to lead the way in supporting welding education and technology development to ensure a strong, competitive and exciting way of life for all Americans.
The society serves more than 55,000 members worldwide. Membership consists of engineers, scientists, educators, researchers, welders, inspectors, welding foremen, company executives and officers, and sales associates. Interests include automatic, semi-automatic and manual welding, as well as brazing, soldering, ceramics, lamination, robotics, and welding safety and health.
