Registered Michigan residents and U.S.
citizens who are not serving a jail or prison
sentence and will be 18 years of age or older
on Nov. 5, 2024 are eligible to vote.

• Ages 16 and older may pre-register to vote in the first election for which they will be 18.
• If you’re currently aged 17 but will be 18 on Nov. 5, 2024, you can pre-register to vote in this election.

Students who have both a permanent (home) address outside of Big Rapids as well as a Big Rapids address while attending Ferris State can choose whether to vote at their home location or in Big Rapids.

• Simply register to vote or update your voter registration using your address in the location you want to vote in.
• Note that this will change your driver’s license or state ID address. However, student voters are permitted to change their address back whenever they choose.
• After your registration or update is processed, you will be mailed a voter ID card that provides the address of your assigned polling place.

Register to vote or update your voter registration using your Big Rapids address. The city clerk will mail you a voter ID card with the address of your Big Rapids polling location after your registration or update has processed.

Whether you register to vote in Big Rapids or
elsewhere in Michigan, you may apply for an
absentee ballot to vote by mail.

• Go to Michigan's Voter Info website no later than Monday, Oct. 21, 2024 to request an absentee ballot online.
• After Oct. 21, you must call or visit the clerk’s or satellite office of the location you plan to vote in. If you are not registered to vote in this location yet, you will be
  required to do so, first.
• Plan ahead and leave enough time to complete and and return your absentee ballot application and your ballot.

Register Online

If you have a Michigan driver’s license or state ID, you can register to vote or update your registered voting address online.

• Go to the Michigan Voter Registration website
• You’ll need your ID number and the last
  four digits of your Social Security number

Register by Mail

You also can register to vote or update your registered voting address by mail.

• Request a voter registration application or registered voting address update form from the clerk’s office or satellite office that serves the location you plan to vote in.
• Complete and mail the form back to that office. Postmark must be no later than Oct. 21, 2024.

Register In-Person

You may also register to vote or update your registered voting address in person.

• Visit the clerk’s or satellite office that serves the location you plan to vote in and complete a voter registration application or registered voting address update form.

The deadline to register to vote in 8 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024.

After October 21, you may only register to vote or update your registered voting address in-person through the clerk's or satellite office that serves the location you plan to vote in. 

You will be required to provide proof of residence. Accepted documents include: 

• Michigan driver's license, state ID, or other government documents
• Current utility bills, bank statements, paychecks or government checks.
• If you register to vote or update your information without enough time to travel to your polling place, you may be provided with an absentee ballot to submit directly to the clerk.
