Ferris State’s Mitch Middleton named GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week after strong football season opener

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — 

Ferris State University senior specialist Mitch Middleton has been chosen as this week's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Football Special Teams Player of the Week.

Middleton, a Mechanical Engineering Technology major from Middleville, had a busy day in the top-ranked Bulldogs' 34-17 home win over Pittsburg State University in the season opener on Thursday at Top Taggart Field.

The Kansas-based Pitt State is ranked No. 9 in the nation.

Middleton averaged 52.5 yards per punt on four tries while pinning Pitt State inside the 20-yard line all four times. He also averaged 57.5 yards per kickoff on six attempts with a touchback.

His played helped Ferris State avenge last year's season-opening setback to the Gorillas and was the Bulldogs' 15th-straight win overall.

Middleton has earned a variety of honors for his athletic and academic performance. He was one of the Fall 2024 GLIAC Commissioner’s Award winners for student-athletes who excel both in the classroom and in competitions. He earned Academic All 

Ferris State will hit the road for another non-league contest on Saturday, Sept. 6, facing Lake Erie University in Painesville, Ohio. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
