BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — 

Ferris State University volleyball player Hayley Wegener earned Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors for the second week in a row and football player Gyasi Mattison was honored for the first time after stellar performances in recent competition.

Wegener is a sophomore setter from Ravenna had a big weekend as the 14th-ranked Bulldogs went 3-0 at the Midwest Region Crossover in Indiana. She claimed All-Tournament team recognition as Ferris State stretched its winning streak to nine consecutive matches and improved to 16-4 overall.

The Accountancy major finished the weekend with 116 assists in 11 sets, averaging 10.55 assists per set. She also had 47 digs, 17 kills, eight blocks and an ace. She averaged 4.27 digs per set in addition to leading the offensive attack from the setter position.

Wegener had a tourney-best 47 assists to go with 17 digs in Ferris State’s win over Maryville and came back with 39 assists and 17 digs in a 3-1 win over Walsh on Friday before closing the event with 30 assists and 13 digs as FSU swept Lewis 3-0 on Saturday.

The volleyball team will host Davenport on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. at Bulldog Arena.

Mattison is a Nashville native majoring in Business Administration. The senior defensive back was named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week after a big day for the nationally top-ranked Bulldogs in an impressive 38-10 road win at Michigan Tech.

In the win over the Huskies, he came up with two of Ferris State’s five total interceptions in the game, all of which came in the opening half of play as the Bulldogs built a 21-3 halftime lead. He also ranked among the team leaders with five total tackles in the game.

His play helped the Ferris State defense limit MTU to only 219 yards of offense and only a two-of-three showing on third down.

Ferris State will host rival Grand Valley State this Saturday, Oc. 25 in the Anchor-Bone Classic at Top Taggart Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
