BIG RAPIDS, Mich. —

Dr. Kathy Mullins, Ferris State University’s vice president for University Advancement and Marketing, is being honored by Crain’s Grand Rapids Business for her leadership in expanding access to higher education and making college more affordable.

Mullins, who has dedicated 30 years to advancing education, is among 28 individuals named a Notable Leader in Philanthropy in the publication’s edition released Monday.

“Across West Michigan, a powerful network of philanthropic leaders drives community transformation through visionary innovation, relentless dedication and compassionate service,” the article reads. “These individuals are the changemakers, representing a diverse cross-section of nonprofits and philanthropic organizations, each committed to empowering communities, advancing equity and making a difference.”

The first in her family to attend college, Mullins is a proud Ferris State alumna, earning her doctoral degree in Community College Leadership. She was appointed vice president for University Advancement and Marketing by President Bill Pink in 2022.

In her role, Mullins oversees The Ferris Foundation, the Alumni Association, and the Marketing and Communications team. She leads initiatives that reduce financial barriers for students, strengthen alumni engagement, and elevate Ferris State’s visibility across Michigan and beyond.

Before returning to Ferris State, Mullins held key leadership positions at Grand Rapids Community College, where she most recently served as vice president for College Advancement and executive director of the GRCC Foundation.

At Ferris State, Mullins and her team have significantly increased scholarship support and raised resources to build the Jim Crow Museum, a new, free-standing museum — the only one of its kind in the world — on the Big Rapids campus to confront painful truths and to create spaces for honest, healing conversations about race and belonging.

“Our work is truly transformative. Scholarships open doors to quality education, and enhanced campus projects strengthen both instruction and the student experience,” Mullins said. “Ferris State has earned the elite distinction of being an ‘Opportunity University,’ reflecting our deep commitment to community impact and student success. Our graduates earn more. When we expand access to education, we’re not just changing individual lives — we’re creating generational change.”

Beyond campus, Mullins is an active community leader. She serves on the boards of the Fair Housing Center of West Michigan and the Salvation Army and was recognized as a 2013 GRCC Salute to Women honoree.

Honorees were selected by Crain’s editors based on nominations. Candidates must hold a senior leadership or board position with a nonprofit organization, have at least five years of experience in the profession, and demonstrate a significant impact within their organization and community.
