Ferris State Accounting Students Help Big Rapids Community with Free Tax Return Assistance

This January through April 15, Ferris State University accounting students step out of the classroom and into the community through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. We had 15 students participate and help fill out 200 tax returns. Now in its sixth season under the leadership of Dr. Emily Zoet, the program has become a vital resource for residents of Mecosta and surrounding counties, especially those who are low-income or elderly.

Operating every Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the MI Works building in Big Rapids, the VITA program offers free tax preparation services to those who need it most. But beyond serving the community, the program provides a powerful learning opportunity for Ferris accounting students.

One of the volunteers, Adam Whiteside, shared his experience with the program: “ VITA is a great way to get some exposure to taxation as a career option. For me, it helped me uncover what kind of work is involved in public accounting beyond just the numbers and forms; just as much of it is working with and understanding the client you are assisting.”

As tax season ends each year, the VITA program leaves a lasting impact, not just on the hundreds of clients served, but on the next generation of accounting professionals.

Whiteside also gave advice to others looking at joining the VITA program: “If you are considering volunteering for VITA, do it. The hours are flexible, the people are great, and it is a low-stakes environment to learn about taxation and working with the public. Plus, it's a great resume builder!”
