2025 Ferris State and Auto Owners Insurance Challenge

For the third consecutive year, Ferris State partnered with Auto-Owners Insurance to offer high school business students an interactive way to familiarize themselves with the insurance industry with their 2025 Ferris State/Auto-Owners Insurance Challenge. This year has had the largest participation yet! In the challenge, students developed and operated their own fictional insurance companies, made marketing decisions, underwriting, allocated financial portfolios, reinsurance, and more.
In February, the challenge made headway with students receiving instructional videos and guides on operating an insurance company. These resources also included important strategic decisions that insurance executives must make.
Following the instructional phase, the insurance company simulation ran through six rounds of each team submitting decisions every week. The results of each simulation round were published for each team to examine before they submitted their next decision.
The winners of this competition were determined by the insurance company simulation software. This software applied a scoring algorithm based on each company’s sales and balance sheet metrics. Later rounds were heavily rated so that mistakes made early on could be easier to overcome.
This challenge gave students an interactive way to learn about the insurance industry. It opened students’ eyes to a new career option. Additionally, 3 top performing teams in each division won both a cash prize and a pizza party.
