Big Rapids' Best Summer Microadventures

Girl laughing in the sun

We’re on a mission to make the most of summer, and we want you along for the ride.

Welcome to your microadventure guide, where we give you 9+ adventures to do right here in Big Rapids. Don’t worry, we accounted for sunny skies and rainy days.

Why microadventures?

Because not every adventure needs a plane ticket. Microadventures are easy day-to-day activities that fit right into your weekly schedule. They’re affordable, easy to plan, and best of all, they’re right where you live.

So get ready to have an intentional summer. A summer prioritizing being present in the moment, embracing the beautiful world around you, and celebrating the joys of everyday life that we often overlook.

Rainy Day Microadventures

Rainy days get a bad rap, but we don’t believe they deserve all the hate they get. Whether it’s curling up inside with a good book, or going to see a play, there are countless ways to make the best of a rainy day.

Enjoy the Ferris State University Fine Arts Gallery

An ever-changing exhibition, the Ferris State Fine Arts Gallery invites individuals to explore thought-provoking art and ideas. Exhibits rotate on a bi-monthly basis, each hand-selected to spark curiosity, and encourage an exchange of deep dialogue. Currently, the Curtis Collection is being housed in the gallery, consisting of over 40 oil paintings by 19th century artists from America, England, France and other European countries.

Catch a production at Stage M. Community Theater

What’s better than a cozy night at the theater, popcorn in hand, and the sound of rain pitter-pattering on the roof at Stage M. Community Theater? This July don’t miss Roald Dahl’s Matilda, with Broadway in the Park wrapping up the summer in August.

Check out Artworks’ Classes

Artworks is your one stop shop for classes, exhibitions, summer camps and so much more. Weekly clubs include photography, painting, music, knitting, woodworking, and even a book club! Without a doubt, you don’t stand a chance of being bored at Artworks this summer.

Outdoor Microadventures

Friends tubing down the Muskegon River

When the sun is shining, Big Rapids is full of places just waiting to be explored.

Explore the Clay Cliffs

This scenic 1.8-mile trail is a local favorite for morning walks. Bring a friend, a podcast, or a cup of coffee to explore the beautiful nature of Big Rapids. Ground yourself in the stillness of the woods while getting some movement in.

Tube the Muskegon River

Nothing says summer like tubing down the Muskegon River. With several tube rentals and transportation options, it’s easy to plan your route down the river. Some options for launch and exit points include Highbanks Park, and Paris Park. Just don’t forget your sunscreen, water, and a speaker.

Complete the Michigan Art Walk

Discover hidden gems across Ferris State’s campus on the Michigan Art Walk tour – a dynamic collection of sculptures and paintings, including one of the largest free-standing canvases in the country. It’s a colorful, self-guided adventure and may even take you to parts of campus you haven’t been to before!

Relaxing Microadventures

Sometimes the best days are slow days. Take some time to rest and recharge with these microadventures.

Head to the Big Rapids Farmers Market

From local produce to handmade goods, the Big Rapids Farmers Market is your go-to for feel-good weekend mornings. Boasting something for everyone, the Market is a great way to support local businesses and discover some unique finds.

Hammock on Campus

So simple yet so satisfying. Find a shady spot and set up your hammock to enjoy the day. Pair it with a book, a journal, or just some thoughts – you can’t go wrong.

Swim at the Charles E. Fairman Community Pool

On those really hot days, check out the Charles E. Fairman Community Pool to cool down! Whether you want to swim laps or float around, you can beat the heat and get your body moving.

Remember: it’s all about intentionality and immersing yourself in the magic of now. Big or small, indoor or outdoor, there’s no wrong way to have a microadventure.
