BIG RAPIDS, Mich. —

The Mexican Consulate, Consulado de Carrera de Mexico en Detroit, is returning to Ferris State University two years after the last visit to again assist people with dual citizenship documentation and related services.

During the January 2023 visit to Ferris State’s Big Rapids campus, this collaborative effort assisted approximately 150 clients over the course of the week. During this summer’s visit, scheduled for Aug. 4-8, the partners anticipate serving similar numbers in the David L. Eisler Center ballrooms.

Sonia Treviño, director of Ferris State’s Hispanic/Latino Cultural Center, views this year’s visit to Ferris State, to offer the mobile consulate service, as once again student-focused and awareness-based.

“There are wonderful benefits to this ongoing partnership with the Mexican Consulate, such as convenient access, increased awareness of the services provided and it definitely promotes engagement with international resources,” Treviño said. “In addition, their presence on campus helps to create a sense of belonging for our Hispanic/Latino students, which can lead to higher retention and academic success.”

Treviño believes collaborations like this, with Roberto Nicolas Vazquez, the consul of Mexico in Detroit since April 2022, are at the heart of Ferris State’s work.

“As ‘Belonging’ is one of our strategic pillars for our university, this initiative of their visit to our campus definitely supports this great work,” she said. “Working together to help bring these services to the community is a testament of Ferris State’s commitment from Woodbridge N. Ferris — making education and services to better the community accessible to all.”

Treviño noted that a central goal is to clear a more convenient path for international students to pursue opportunities and achieve success.

“The ‘Consulado Sobre Ruedas’ (The Consulate on Wheels) is an effort by the Mexican government to assist community members with document processing such as passports, consular IDs, visa renewals, etc.,” she said. “They also provide guidance on requirements, fees and timelines for various documents.”

This effort’s comprehensiveness helps minimize the need to visit with multiple people for services and with questions that can be consolidated for their convenience.

Said Treviño, “It’s definitely a convenient one-stop shop for the services they provide.”
