BIG RAPIDS, Mich. —

A powerful and award-winning documentary produced by Ferris State University is earning the spotlight again — this time on the big screen.

“Where Impact Lands: The X Games Intern Experience” has been selected for screening at two distinguished film festivals this fall: the Royal Starr Film Festival in Birmingham, Michigan, and the Maumee Film Festival in Ohio.

The documentary, which follows Ferris State students gaining real-world experience behind the scenes at the X Games in Aspen, captures the energy, challenges, and personal growth that come with stepping into high-stakes professional roles.

The film previously earned a Gold Viddy Award from the international Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals, distinguishing it among thousands of entries worldwide.

Directed and edited by Ferris State videographer Ellen Dziubek and produced by Eric Hazen, Ferris State’s executive director of Digital Experience and Marketing, the film offers a front-row seat to the transformative journey of students immersed in hospitality and event management at a global sports spectacle.

The video is available here.

“This film isn’t just about internships — it’s about how opportunity, pressure, and purpose come together to shape who you become,” Hazen said. “We’re proud to shine a light on the grit and professionalism of Ferris State students. Being recognized by two respected festivals only affirms that these stories matter — and they resonate far beyond our campus.”

Working under the guidance of professors Amy Dorey and Karyn Kiio from Ferris’ College of Business, students played vital roles in the X Games experience — from coordinating guest services to assisting with medal presentations. Their on-the-ground involvement showcased not only technical skills but adaptability, leadership, and poise under pressure.

“What makes this documentary special is how real it is,” Dziubek said. “Nothing was scripted. We just let things unfold. You see students pushing themselves, finding their voices, and stepping up in amazing ways. For me, it was about more than just creating a film. I got to really connect with these students, hear their stories, and be part of their journey. I feel like I gained just as much from the experience as they did. That honesty and connection is what makes people respond to it.”

The Royal Starr Film Festival, running Sept. 11–14, is an international event that curates compelling shorts, features, and documentaries, screened at the historic Birmingham 8 powered by Emagine Theaters. Hosted by the Royal Starr Arts Institute, the festival draws filmmakers and cinephiles from around the globe.

Later in the month, the documentary will screen at the Maumee Film Festival, held Sept. 26–28 at the classic Maumee Indoor Theater just outside Toledo, Ohio. The festival is a celebration of independent filmmaking and storytelling, backed by the Maumee Uptown Business Association, FilmToledo, and Ohio Goes to the Movies!

“Where Impact Lands” stands out not only for its compelling subject but also for its prestigious recognition. The Gold Viddy Award it received earlier this year places it among top-tier global productions.

The AMCP competition, one of the largest in the industry, attracts tens of thousands of entries from over 135 countries — including corporate giants, creative agencies, and major universities. Ferris State was the only Michigan university recognized this year, a distinction that underscores the institution’s commitment to excellence in experiential learning and storytelling.
