BIG RAPIDS, Mich. —

Ferris State University’s LGBTQ+ community will reflect on victims of violence and share support at a Transgender Day of Remembrance observance that is open to campus and community.

The Nov. 20 event is organized by Ferris’ LGTBQ+ Resource Center and will get underway on the Robinson Quad at 4:30 p.m.

“The vigil is designed to honor the lives of transgender individuals that have been cut short due to violence,” Resource Center Director Becca Osborne said. “There will be a reading of the names, lighting of candles, and a moment of silence. Each year, it is important for us to mourn the loss of our trans siblings and continue to tell their stories in the hopes that violence against the LGBTQ+ community will one day cease.”

The eVideo “What Are You?: Microaggressions and LGBTQ Identities” will be shown after the vigil program.

“We will reconvene in Room 211 of the David L. Eisler Center and view this message about growing up gay, lesbian, bisexual, gender non-conforming and transgender in the Pacific Northwest,” Osborne said. “It is important for everyone to see the realities facing transgender youth, who often fear that they won’t live long enough to thrive as trans adults.”

Those who require assistance or accommodation to participate in the vigil and documentary viewing can contact Osborne at (231) 591-2663 or by email.
