“Say it Loud – Beyond Built Environment” features the work of architects, designers, and other professionals from underrepresented populations. It runs through Dec. 6 at the Fine Art Gallery inside the David L. Eisler Center, 805 Campus Drive in Big Rapids.

“Say It Loud is a powerful exhibit that fosters awareness about how architecture can create more equitable and inclusive communities,” Fine Art Gallery director Carrie Weis said. “By showcasing traditionally underrepresented designers, we can inspire students to think critically about their future work and challenge future designers and architects to rethink spaces that welcome all races, genders and cultural backgrounds.”

“Beyond the Built Environment” is an opportunity for the university to showcase opportunities for diverse and underrepresented populations in the built environment occupations.

“This exhibit is an important tool for fostering a more inclusive, reflective, and engaged campus environment, encouraging visitors to consider how the built environment can both reflect and shape the values of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging,” Weis said.

Kate O’Connor, dean of the College of Engineering Technology, liked what she saw of the exhibit.

“I just walked through the exhibit and spoke with Carrie,” O’Connor said. “It looks amazing – like it was designed for the space.”

The School of Built Environment in Ferris State’s College of Engineering Technology includes academic programs to put students on career paths in construction, design, operation and maintenance for buildings and infrastructure.

Specific academic programs include Architectural Technology, Architecture and Sustainability, Construction Management, Facility Management, and Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.

Ferris State’s Fine Art Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission to the gallery and exhibit is free.
