Ferris State University athletes and fans are wearing red this Saturday, Feb. 3, as part of a “Red Out” event to promote women’s heart health.

The Sports Careers student organization and Ferris State’s Sports Communication program are teaming up during the Bulldogs’ basketball doubleheader against Michigan Tech, and the hockey game against Bowling Green hockey game that evening.

Sports Careers vice president Dylan Rider, a Sports Communication major from Sparta, said the groups are making use of an optimal point in the winter sports calendar to approach fans attending the 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contests in Jim Wink Arena, and the crowd gathering for the Central Collegiate Hockey Association game, which will begin at 6:07 p.m.

The Bulldog men’s basketball, women’s basketball and hockey teams will all be wearing their red uniforms.

“As we collaborate with Ferris Athletics, this proved to be a cohesive day to make this appeal,” Rider said. “It can be a long day for our volunteers, but it works well for us.”

Rider said proceeds from a silent auction and “miracle minutes” designed to collect donations from fans during each game will be given to the Corewell Health-Big Rapids Cardiac Unit.

“Wherever it can be used to benefit their operation, these funds will be available to them,” Rider said. “We are proud to be making a difference in our community as American Heart Month begins.”

Fans attending the contests that day are encouraged to wear red to promote greater focus on cardiovascular health. Rider said their Red Out promotions will go beyond that backdrop in the stands.

“Women’s heart health is an issue that needs more discussion, since many campaigns over the years have been structured to reach male audiences,” Rider said. “We have planned an uplifting message that day, emphasizing awareness of women’s heart health on poster boards and video boards in both arenas, as well as displays at our table in the lobby of the Ewigleben Sports Complex.”
