Hall Director Job Description

Ferris State University invites application for Residence Hall Directors with the Office of Housing & Residence Life. This is a full-time 12 month, live-in position.

Ferris State University is a state funded institution enrolling 13,798 students for the fall 2017 classes, including 9,868 on the main Big Rapids, Michigan Campus. The Big Rapids campus is located in scenic West Michigan on the Muskegon River near the Manistee National Forest. Big Rapids is surrounded by the great outdoors but we're within a 45 minute drive of a major urban city, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Ferris State University has 12 Residence Halls (ranging in size from 110 to 468 residents), a 300 bed Suite Style apartment living community, and a 433 bed apartment community on campus. Together these residential facilities house more than 3400 students on campus.

Hall Directors provide comprehensive supervision of 1 to 3 residence halls, the 300-bed suites complex East Campus Suites, or the 433-bed West Campus Apartments. Hall Directors recruit, train, supervise, and mentor residence hall staff; 6 to 21 student staff members which include: Resident Advisors/Community Advisors, Desk Service Managers, and typically one senior staff member. Hall Directors are also direct supervisors of the front desks in their communities and work in conjunction with the Desk Service Manager to recruit, train, and supervise 2 to 20 Desk Service Assistants.

Hall Directors actively participate on departmental and university-wide committees, manage facilities, advise Hall Council and train RA/CA staff to advise House Councils, coordinate programming/community development and provide overall leadership in the academic, social and emotional development of students. In addition, Hall Directors serve as conduct hearing officers adjudicating cases and recommending educational sanctions.

Typically, our Hall Directors come to Ferris State having earned a student personnel degree and have served in a residence life graduate assistantship as a Hall Director or Assistant Hall Director.
