Everyone deserves to feel comfortable using the bathroom. But for many in our community, when the only available options are gender-specific, it can turn a routine trip to the restroom into a daunting challenge.
That's why, as a college and a community that strives to create inclusive and equitable
spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and supported, KCAD has designated specific
restrooms on campus for use by all genders.
An all-gender restroom simply refers to a restroom in which people of any and all gender expressions are welcome, including people who identify as transgender or nonbinary.
When made accessible under the guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), all-gender restrooms also give caregivers or helpers for people with disabilities—who
may need to assist someone of a different gender—a comfortable place to do so. They
can serve parents accompanying their young child to the restroom in the same way.
Many people experience difficulty when required to use gender-specific restrooms. Especially for transgender and/or gender non-conforming people, the use of public restrooms can lead to harassment, deep discomfort, or even physical violence.
All-gender restrooms offer an inclusive alternative that, when paired with gender-specific restrooms and accessible design features, helps make sure that everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
There are currently four all-gender restroom locations on campus. See the map below for details.
All-gender restrooms on campus are identified with one of the following signs. The signage indicates what type of facilities are available inside the restroom, its occupancy rating, and whether or not it is accessible under the ADA.
