Statement

Creating patterns through painting has given me the ability to explore the ethereal, abstracted space within my subconscious and allowed me to express my emotions as I try to navigate through the challenges of my own mental health. Channeling the energy from the constant mental commotion I encounter into repetitious tasks helps to calm my internal unrest. Focusing on patterns establishes a meditative environment that grants me the freedom to concentrate on my artwork and my process, becoming a more peaceful and limitless experience.

Every small detail and every brush stroke is just as important as the next, along with balancing the harmony between positive and negative spaces that intricately weave into one another, which all serve as an extension of my character. Working with patterns gives me the courage to go beyond my own expectations, to dive into infinite possibilities, and to give my audience a glimpse of the world I am continuously developing.

What my time at KCAD meant to me

My experience at KCAD has been challenging yet prosperous and the friendships I have made throughout the years will be long-lasting. Finally graduating from the MFA program is bittersweet, knowing that I have reached the end of my time at KCAD, but I am so grateful for the opportunities this institution has given me. I have reached new heights and have learned so much about myself as the artist I have always striven to be, and pushing past my own limitations has been incredibly rewarding.

I do not know what the future has in store for me, whether it is teaching, gallery work, or creating a new gallery space to expand the art community here in Grand Rapids, but I do know that it is bright and full of endless possibilities. I am letting the winds of creativity take me wherever they can, always looking forward to the new challenges that are waiting right around the corner and continuing to explore every artistic avenue that I approach.
