BIG RAPIDS, Mich. —

Nearly 200 community members gathered at Ferris State University to honor the commitment, contributions, and sacrifices of law enforcement personnel as the university’s Department of Public Safety hosted its 19th annual Police Memorial.

Police Officer Memorial Day started with a congressional resolution to remember those who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Six Ferris State Criminal Justice program graduates were acknowledged by name and “end of watch” commemorations during the ceremony by Law Enforcement Academy alumna Keauna Kriston, who will soon join the Ferris State DPS.

Ferris State President Bill Pink spoke of the dedication of those sworn to protect and serve the public, which cannot be overstated.

“If no one intercedes for the people, what happens to the people?” Pink said. “We are here to remember not just those who gave their lives for this purpose, but those who are serving and committed to serving.”

The keynote speaker for the memorial, 100th District State Representative Tom Kunse, R-Clare, admired the constancy of those who work for justice and peace.

“We expect our police officers to be ‘perfect,’ to run toward the danger,” Kunse said. “They serve in the intersections of our lives in so many ways. They go out and protect us, knowing the danger, and that is a daily miracle.”
