Web accessibility is the inclusive practice of removing barriers which prevent access to information and functionalities on websites. An online document or tool is considered accessible when it can be easily understood and used by everyone, regardless of the browser or adaptive equipment being used. This website provides a central place for web accessibility standards, tutorials and resources available to the Ferris State University community.
At Ferris, we serve a diverse audience that relies increasingly on the Internet for many aspects of life, including education, employment opportunities, research, health care and recreation. In today’s society, it is essential that we provide equal access and opportunity to all users accessing the University’s websites and services, including those with disabilities. Accessible Design can diminish and even remove barriers to information and interaction critical to success for our faculty, staff, students and the general public.
In the Fall of 2017, the University community was informed that they must move toward compliance with the University's Use of Electronic and Information Technology Accessibility Policy (EIT Policy).
Ferris has updated its web accessibility technical guidelines to be compliant with WCAG 2.0 AA. University departments and employees are asked to check their web pages and online course materials for accessibility, to caption their videos, and to ensure that additional technologies used to conduct university business or academic activities meet a minimum conformance level of AA.
The Staff Center for Training and Development provides training to Ferris personnel on creating accessible documents, Word and PDF files, and forms. Additionally, faculty can contact Extended and International Operations (EIO) for assistance in making Blackboard modules and course materials accessible. Departments and units with content on the ferris.edu website can work with the Web Team in University Advancement and Marketing to make their pages accessible.
Web accessibility and accessible technology helps to fulfill Ferris State University’s mission in preparing all students for successful careers, responsible citizenship and lifelong learning. This initiative assists Ferris in meeting federal requirements for Electronic Information Technology while serving our rapidly changing global economy and society.
