Cross-Campus Support for Dining Services’ Sponsor a Brutus Box Meals over Thanksgiving Break

To meet Ferris State University Dining Services’ clients’ nutritional and social needs, “Sponsor A Brutus Box” took place during the fourth week of November. More than 100 students accepted support packages.

Director of Dining Services Scott Rossen said his operation grouped six ready-to-eat meals they produced at cost, including a traditional Thanksgiving dinner and other options.

“Almost universally, a turkey dinner with the trimmings were included in the packages, but there were various entrees and sandwich-based selections we included to provide two meals a day, over the holiday break,” Rossen said. “The package cost came to about $30, so, thanks to $4,000 in donations offered by faculty, staff and others, we fed our charges and gave $968 to the recently-established Bulldog Basic Needs Alliance.”

Based on the number of requests made, Rossen said Dining Services expanded the opportunity beyond students from residence halls and campus apartments to include off-campus students holding meal plan contracts.

“As we entered the fall semester, our original plan was to arrange and present a communal Thanksgiving meal, but for obvious reasons, that concept was set aside,” Rossen said. “We shifted our emphasis to meet the basic need of students, who, in many cases, chose to stay on campus through the holiday weekend to promote and maximize the health and safety of family members back home. Those who picked up their Brutus Box packages seemed very happy to have a bit of comfort food during this unique period and most thankful for the support from the campus community that made it possible.”
