Wintermester Offerings Expanded for 2019-20, Organizers Expect Greater Participation

WintermesterRegistration began Monday, Oct. 28, for Ferris State University's second Wintermester program, which is an online instruction program that is set from Monday, Dec. 16 to Friday, Jan. 10, 2020

Online learning opportunities through Ferris State University’s Extended and International Operations unit are available in the second Wintermester, with a slate of 13 classes to be offered from Monday, Dec. 16 through Friday, Jan. 10, 2020.

Executive Director for Online Learning Amy Greene said input offered by the deans of Ferris’ colleges prompted the expansion of Wintermester offerings from the six courses available last year.

“Their feedback prompted us to offer popular courses that frequently fill up in a traditional semester,” Greene said. “While we have general education offerings, such as Introduction to Cultural Anthropology, there are also 300-level sections in Criminal Justice, French, Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology.”

Greene said the university hopes that at least 250 students enroll for the fast-paced, immersive courses structured to engage students regularly through the campus’ holiday break.

“Faculty have the option to present these courses using Blackboard or Canvas,” Greene said. “Canvas’ potential advantage in the Wintermester format is that technical support is available ‘24/7/365,’ which may benefit students and faculty engaged in learning when our main campus is idle. We are pleased that the colleges are also willing to add sections of classes if student response merits an addition.”
