Native American Heritage Celebration Nov. 13 to Include Tribute to Veterans

Native American Heritage MonthFerris State University’s Native American Heritage Month celebration concludes Tuesday, Nov. 13, with the public invited to participate in a celebration in Room 217 of the University Center.

The Office of Multicultural Student Services is collaborating with the Circle of Tribal Nations for this event, according to OMSS Assistant Director Michael Wade.

“This is the main event of our schedule offered in recognition of Native Americans on our campus, and in the community,” Wade said. “We sought to honor both the veterans with this background and other appropriate groups in a concise fashion to maximize the meaning and impact of the celebration.”

Wade and Circle of Tribal Nations advisor Scott Herron will welcome the audience and participants beginning at 5 p.m., with a pow-wow exhibition at approximately 5:30 p.m.

“Men and women from the Ziibiwing Center and their Anishinabe Performance Circle will perform traditional dances along with an exploration of the significance of their activity,” Wade said of the Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture, based in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. “Our goal is to promote learning about and appreciation of the Native American culture. So, we welcome anyone interested in attending.”

Steve Perry, of the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians, will be the evening’s guest speaker. Wade said that Perry, as a Native American, can provide a unique and thoughtful perspective for those attending the event.

“He will be talking about how veterans should be given honor, and the importance of helping them to feel included,” Wade said. “As a former member of the armed forces, we are looking forward to hearing his message.”

The event is free and open to the public.

Students and other Ferris community members interested in participating are invited to sign in and RSVP using OrgSync. Anyone with a disability who would require special accommodations to attend the Native American Heritage Celebration is invited to contact Wade at (231) 591-5029 or by email.
