Summer Internships: Dominic Lutz

Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet:

Ferris State UniversityDominic Lutz

He is: a junior from Livonia, dual-majoring in Accounting and Finance.

His Internship: Working with the finance operations, financial planning and analysis, and accounting teams while interning at Yanfeng, an automotive interiors manufacturer, at their Novi headquarters. “All three relate to what I am studying at school and allowed me to connect my learning at Ferris to the real world. Excel is a specific example of something I have learned in-depth while working here. I use this software several hours each day and have become much more efficient compared to my first day on the job.”

How Ferris Helped Dominic Gain his Internship: “Internship opportunities are often posted around the College of Business and faculty members are always available to help students find what they’re looking for. I first spoke with members from Yanfeng at a career fair at school and had an interview shortly thereafter. Once I had accepted the position, enrolling in the summer internship class was a simple task. Ferris gave me resources needed to find an ideal summer position. There are also plenty of faculty members willing to help, who can offer great leads and advice.”

Advice to Other Students Seeking Internships: “The career fairs Ferris offers are a great way to network and get in touch with companies. Many internships are found at these events every year, including the opportunity I am enjoying this summer. In addition, I did not limit myself to a few options. I applied to plenty of positions on recruiting websites, to give myself a better chance of finding a summer internship. Any interview experience is great practice. So, even those that did not work out were still beneficial to me.”

Making a Difference in His Internship: “Whenever I find myself without something to work on, I reach out to others to see if they have any extra work I can take off their hands. By doing so, I have helped more employees than just those I directly work for. This also benefited me, personally, since I got to experience tasks in multiple departments. Some projects I have worked on have been designed to simplify procedures, making other employee’s job less stressful. I’ve also contributed to tracking and analyzing variable costs, which assists the finance operations team.”

Other Activities at Ferris: “I play for the Division I hockey team at Ferris.”

Future Plans: “I am hoping this internship will be extended, so that I can pick up next May where I left off. If so, I could potentially see myself trying to make a career at Yanfeng upon graduation. If things do not pan out, I would apply elsewhere to find another internship next summer. Overall, I have gained plenty of helpful knowledge over the past few months that will help me wherever my professional career takes me.”
