Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.
Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet:
Emily Hamner
She is: a junior from Battle Creek, Michigan majoring in Advertising/Integrated Marketing Communications.
Her Internship: She is serving as an account coordinator intern for Anthem Worldwide in Battle Creek. “I am learning the skills involved within an account coordinator role, including: client engagement, presenting creative, managing budgets and project timelines, and writing different tasks to creatives to accomplish the client objectives. The overall experience I have had while at my second summer here was even more amazing than the first. I have learned how to work with clients and have honestly felt like a member of the team at Anthem.”
Making a Difference at Her Internship: “This is my second year in the Battle Creek office for Anthem. I was lucky enough to be welcomed back into my position and excel even more at the roles and responsibilities that come along with the account role. I am helping develop package designs for new products, refreshing old packages, and working to maintain good relations with our clients over at Kellogg’s.”
Advice for Other Students Seeking Internships: “I would strongly advise other students to start looking early. I got my first internship right after my freshman year. The more information you gain about your field early on in your career is amazing. The knowledge that you can obtain outside of the classroom truly will shape you into the right position to graduate and get your dream job.”
Involvement in Other Campus Groups/Organizations: “I just finished up my term on the executive board for AMA/Ferris (American Marketing Association student organization) where I was the communications vice president, which meant handling all of our social media accounts. I am also a part of the Greek Life community as a member of Zeta Tau Alpha.”
Ferris Core Value Emily Relates to: Opportunity. “During my time at Ferris, I have felt an abundance of opportunities come my way, from community service events, career growth workshops, the organizations I am a part of, or the opportunities provided within the classroom have made me feel as though I have grown immensely since I started at Ferris in the fall of 2016.”
