Summer Internships: David Mann

Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet:

Ferris State UniversityDavid Mann

He is: a senior from Kalamazoo, Mich., majoring in Sports Marketing.

His internship: David is part of the business operations staff with the West Michigan Whitecaps minor league baseball team in Comstock Park. He sees his experience managing parking lot operations being similar to a small business operation. “It’s an important first point of contact with the client, image is important, so you make sure to smile and present a happy, positive image.”

Future plans: David has become enamored with minor league baseball during this, his second internship. His first experience was with the Grand Rapids Drive, an NBA Developmental League team. “I hope to progress to the point of becoming a general manager of a team, and eventually, a president,” he said.

Other experience at Ferris: David had been a member of the football team.

Ferris Core Value David relates to: Learning. “With the Whitecaps, we were sitting down with the owners on our first day. They, along with the management staff, are very accessible, and willing to help us learn, by sharing experiences, and answering all our questions.”

Making a Difference in his internship: “I have made a point to take pride in Fifth Third Ballpark. I routinely give of my time to put in extra effort, and assure that the park’s appearance is at its best. My supervisors have seen me involved in this activity, and say how they appreciate this effort.”
