Demolition Due for East and South Campus Apartment Buildings

Ferris State UniversityLong-serving apartment buildings near South Street and Ives Avenue will be demolished, and those properties will be cleared during the summer, according to Ferris State University’s Physical Plant office.

Associate Vice President for Physical Plant Mike Hughes said that the six buildings in the East and South Campus Apartments are two-story structures. Buildings “H” and “K” remained in service after a majority of the East Campus complex was demolished, prior to the construction of the East Campus Suites, which opened to students in 2010.

“These are 1960s-vintage structures, and in their time, had been popular and had full occupancy,” Hughes said. “The university’s master plan called for their removal, and there are no definite plans for that space east of the Student Recreation Center at this time.”

Clearing four South Campus apartment buildings will facilitate development of a new, natural-turf field for soccer competition, as well as a football practice facility, and a synthetic field. Hughes said that most of the heavy construction work in that area should be complete by late fall of this year.

“The synthetic field is likely to see its first use from intramural sports,” Hughes said. “It will likely take a couple of years to get natural turf in that area up to a competitive level, meaning soccer could be played there in the fall of 2017.”

All the buildings to be demolished will undergo salvage work and asbestos abatement, and Hughes said that Lot 16, a parking area east of Pickell Hall will be closed for a time. That will accommodate the construction of a sanitary sewer line that will be routed under South Street.

“Once the buildings are down and demolition crews are done with their work, there will be some intermittent lane closures to allow building materials to be collected, and hauled away,” Hughes said.
