Summer Internships: Tiffany Newman

Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet:

Tiffany NewmanTiffany Newman

She is: A senior in Biotechnology and Forensic Biology from Chelsea, Mich., planning to graduate with her Bachelor of Science degree in December.

Internship: Tiffany is part of a team of students who have been sampling lakes in Mecosta County, with the goal of making presentations on their findings. Tiffany has been testing for Volatile Organic Compounds. “We use inflatable kayaks to head out into the lake and draw our samples,” Newman said. “We will gather three samples from each lake being tested.”

How Ferris Helped: As president of the DNA/Biotechnology Registered Student Organization, Tiffany attended a campus presentation by Sean McCormick, the director of the Shimadzu Core Lab for Academic and Research Excellence. As Tiffany hopes to pursue a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology, she saw the internship as an excellent opportunity to gain skills by using the Shimadzu Core Lab’s instrumentation.

Her Advice to Students Seeking Internships: “Consider the equipment that is available, as the more equipment you can experience, the better you can present yourself as a strong candidate in research.” Tiffany cited the Maldi-Tof mass spectrometer in the Shimadzu Core lab as an example.

The Ferris Core Value I Relate to: is Learning. “I try to absorb as much as I can, in my studies and in my internship, so that I can apply what I learn in my future opportunities.”
